Greta Van Susteren is an American commentator and is currently a national political analyst at Gray Television. She is a former television news anchor for CNN, Fox News, and NBC News. She hosted Fox News's On the Record w/ Greta Van Susteren for nearly 15 years (2002–2016) before departing for MSNBC, where she hosted For the Record with Greta for roughly six months in 2017. A former criminal defense and civil trial lawyer, she appeared as a legal analyst on CNN co-hosting Burden of Proof with Roger Cossack from 1994 to 2002, playing defense attorney to Cossack's prosecutor. In 2016, she was listed as the 94th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes, up from 99th in 2015. She currently hosts Plugged in with Geta Van Susteren on Voice of America news outlet. While at Fox News Channel Van Susteren has interviewed President Bill Clinton, President George H. W. Bush, President George W. Bush, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, then-Senator Barack Obama, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates as well as many other notable cabinet members, U.S. Senators, members of Congress, governors and spiritual leaders, including Reverend Billy Graham. Her advocacy for the people of Haiti helped save thousands of lives. Samaritan’s Purse’s Haitian relief project The Greta Home and Academy, named after Greta, is dedicated to providing a Christian environment for orphans and vulnerable children in the Léogâne community in Haiti. Van Susteren joined CNN in 1991 as a legal analyst and, during her tenure with the network, contributed analysis to high-profile cases including the O.J. Simpson criminal and civil trials and the Elian Gonzalez custody battle. She also played an integral role in the legal analysis of CNN's coverage of Election 2000, for which she earned the American Bar Association's Presidential Award for Excellence in Journalism. Van Susteren has represented various clients in civil and criminal cases during her career as a trial attorney. In addition to arguing cases in federal appellate courts and state supreme courts, she is the author of a chapter on witness and client representation in Federal Enforcement 1992: Defense Strategies for Winning White Collar Trial. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Van Susteren received a bachelor's degree with distinction in economics. She earned a Juris Doctor from Georgetown Law in 1979 and a Master of Law from the school in 1982. Van Susteren was the first Stuart Stiller Fellow at Georgetown Law Center and was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from Georgetown Law School. She served as an adjunct professor at the Law Center from 1984 through 1999. Van Susteren sits on the Board of Directors at the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation and was dubbed one of the world's 100 most powerful women by Forbes Magazine. She is the recipient of the 2015 Excellence in Media Award from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Van Susteren was also awarded both the 2000-2001 Sandra Day O'Connor Medal of Honor from Seton Hall University and the 2001 American Bar Association Presidential Award for "Excellence in journalism.” She is also the recipient of the first place 2002 National Headliners Award as part of an investigative team covering the "Attack on America." In addition, Van Susteren is the co-author of My Turn at The Bullypulpit: Straight Talk About The Things That Drive Me Nuts. Greta is married to John P. Coale and lives in Washington, D.C.
